Mary Alice (Seeman) Colson, 89, of Streator passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at the Pavilion of Ottawa.
A private family service will be held. Burial will be in Chenoa Township Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Streator or OSF Home Health & Hospice Care in Ottawa or Pavilion of Ottawa Nursing Home.
Mary was born December 15, 1934 in Chenoa, the daughter of Fred L. and Myrtle (Myer) Seeman. She married Rolla G. Colson on September 15, 1956 in Chenoa.
Surviving are her children: Lisa (Daniel) Park of Orangeville, Eric Colson of Chicago, and Brad Colson of Ottawa; grandchildren, Sarah (Paul) Burandt of Dubuque, IA, and John Park of Ottawa; great-grandson, Lucas Burandt; brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Dottie Seeman, Chenoa, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rolla, her parents, and siblings, Arletta Klomparens and Lois LaVerne Martin.
Mary earned her Nursing degree from Mennonite College of Nursing in Normal, graduating in 1955. She began working as a Registered Nurse at hospitals in Normal, Charleston, and Carle Hospital in Urbana where Rolla finished college at the University of Illinois and also where they had their first home. She worked for Carle Hospital, Urbana, until they relocated to Streator in 1975 with Rolla’s job. Mary worked for St. Mary’s Hospital, Streator from 1975-1979 and in 1979 she became Director of Nursing for Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Streator. She completed a bachelor’s degree from College of St. Francis (Joliet, IL) in Community Health and obtained her license to be the Nursing Home Administrator for Heritage Manor in Streator in 1985.
Mary was awarded the Nursing Home Administrator of the Year Award in 2001. Mary was a very dedicated nurse and had a passion for nursing care. She touched the lives of so many people.
Mary was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Streator. She was a member of the Business Professional Women’s Club of Streator. After her retirement, she remained involved with volunteering at Heritage Manor Nursing Home.
Mary enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, crocheting, knitting, and tole painting. She remained active for many years, walking, bicycling, cross country skiing and she loved to travel.
